Needlesticks are one of the most common injuries when using lancets. It is important to utilize the best methods of practice when preparing the lancing device for use in performing a blood glucose test and the disposal of the used lancet to help avoid injury.

Additionally, to help further reduce the chance of injury it is recommended that:
Do not twist off the protective cover of the disposable lancet until the lancet is property seated within the lancing device chamber.
Do not use lancets that are bent or broken.
Lancets have been pre-sterilized for use. Do not wipe its needle with alcohol swabs before or after use.
To avoid cross-infection of blood borne pathogens, do not reuse or share used lancets.
Do not use a lancet if you find its protection cover fell off.
After using a lancet, insert the lancet tip into its protective cover without touching the needle.
Safely eject the used lancet from the lancing device.
Discard used lancets into a puncture-proof or biohazard container and Dispose of used sharps disposal containers according to your community guidelines.
